Senena is a photographic exploration of the contemporary clothing heritage of the Philippines. It is also an intergenerational project that focuses on the women in my family.
At its core, Senena takes inspiration from a treasured collection of garments dating back to 1935, made for lola (Tagalog for grandmother).
These precious garments were passed down to me by my mother-in-law, with the intention of continuing their legacy by my daughter, also named Senena in honor of her great-grandmother.
This project weaves together the narratives of women from different generations within the family. It examines various themes such as migration, displacement, oral history, globalization, manufacturing, colonization, and geo-politics. Through the lens of fashion and personal stories, Senena sheds light on the interconnectedness of these themes and their impact on our collective experiences.
